Project Overview
Title: Protect Your Health – Free & Confidential STI Testing
Timeline: January 2024 – January 2025
Location: Top One Research Group Clinics, West Palm Beach, FL
Participants Enrolled: 182 adults (ages 18–65)
Status: Completed
Background & Rationale
STIs often go undiagnosed due to cost, stigma, and inconvenience, fueling ongoing transmission and delayed treatment. Early detection of HIV‑1/2, HBV, HCV, syphilis, and common co‑infections is critical for individual outcomes and public health. Our “Protect Your Health” program eliminated these barriers by offering no‑cost, discreet testing in a trusted clinical environment—generating actionable data and rapid care linkage for sponsors invested in community health impact.
Objectives
Increase Screening Uptake: Deliver accessible, confidential testing to at‑risk and general adult populations.
Identify Undiagnosed Infections: Detect acute and chronic STI cases early to enable prompt treatment.
Assess Participant Experience: Measure satisfaction, perceived confidentiality, and likelihood to recommend.
Study Design & Methodology
Recruitment & Consent: Flyers, community partners, and social media recruited adults 18–65. Consent emphasized privacy safeguards.
Testing Protocol: Certified nurses drew blood for HIV‑1/2 rapid tests (same‑day results), HBV surface antigen, HCV antibody, and syphilis/co‑infection panels (results in 48 hours).
Data Management: Secure HIPAA‑compliant eCRFs captured demographics, risk factors, and outcomes. Positive/indeterminate results triggered immediate counseling and referral.
Key Challenges & Solutions
Challenge | Solution | Sponsor Value |
Stigma & privacy concerns | Private “Express Testing” suite with separate entrance & kiosk | Increased uptake; protects participant anonymity |
Follow‑up coordination | Partnered with local clinic for next‑day appointments; SMS reminders | Raised follow‑up from 78 % → 96 % |
Staffing for high demand | Added part‑time phlebotomist shifts & weekend incentives | Maintained throughput; avoided downtime |
Outcomes & Impact
Volume & Positivity: 182 tested; 4 HIV‑1 (2.2 %), 1 HIV‑2 (0.5 %), 6 HBV (3.3 %), 3 HCV (1.6 %), 5 co‑infections (2.7 %).
Linkage to Care: 100 % referred within 48 hours; 96 % attended first follow‑up.
Participant Satisfaction: 94 % rated “Very Good,” citing confidentiality and convenience.
Lessons Learned & Next Steps
Dedicated Private Spaces: Essential for overcoming stigma and maximizing uptake.
Seamless Referral Pathways: Formal care partnerships ensure rapid treatment initiation.
Mobile Outreach Expansion: Planning a mobile testing van to reach underserved neighborhoods and boost screening volume.
